It appears that an apology is in order.
Yesterday, we asked two previous Eastercons if they would send out a message to their membership lists on our behalf. Traditionally, this is done by the Eastercon where the bid is won, usually two years out from the convention. However, because we didn’t have a bid at EightSquaredCon, they couldn’t do this for us. After Satellite 4, everyone was so taken up with Loncon 3 that we neglected to ask for this to be done. Here we are in October and we are trying to do the most we can to promote the convention (so that we don’t lose our houses because the convention makes a loss!) and we thought it would be best to ask the last London-based Eastercon (Olympus 2012) if they would send it out, which they very kindly agreed to do. This appears to have caused confusion and given the impression that we have been given these email addresses – we haven’t.
To reiterate: we sent the message to Olympus and they very kindly sent it out on our behalf. We do not have the email addresses of the people the message went to unless they have already bought membership to Dysprosium. This was a one-off message and was never intended to be repeated. Olympus is not at fault.
We have asked Satellite 4 to not send the message out to their membership database. Hopefully in time.
We apologise profusely for any distress caused to anyone. As stated above, this was not our mailing list, so we do NOT have access to these addresses unless they have been provided to us as part of the signing up for membership for Dysprosium.
